Stahl House
According to Docomomo US: “Perhaps the most iconic house constructed in Arts & Architecture magazine’s Case Study House Program (1945-66), the L-shaped Stahl House (Case Study House #22) consists almost entirely of steel and glass… Situated atop a promontory overlooking Los Angeles, the living room cantilevers over a dramatic precipice.” The house was built in 1959-60 for Buck Stahl and his wife Carlotta. Stahl had bought the property in 1954, made a model of the house they wanted built there and showed it to a number of architects. It wasn’t until 1957 that they encountered Pierre Koenig, who was designing the glass and steel Case Study House #21 at the time. The Stahl project put Koenig on the map as an architect with an incredible eye for balance, symmetry and restraint. The house is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and listed on the National Regsiter of Historic Places.
