Greystone Mansion
Listed as Doheny Estate/Greystone, or Greystone Park, on the National Register of Historic Places, the 18.3-acre site of Greystone Mansion and Gardens was purchased by the City of Beverly Hills in 1965 and dedicated as a public park in 1971. Early in the 20th century, Edward L. Doheny purchased approximately 600 acres of the barren foothills west of the Central Los Angeles area as a possible oil drilling site. The property proved to be a poor oil prospect, but an excellent site for a summer ranch retreat. The Doheny Family used a large portion of the land for raising orange and lemon trees. In 1925, Doheny decided to build a home for his only son, Edward “Ned” Doheny, on a portion of the ranch. Completed in 1928, the 46,000 sq ft mansion contains 55 major rooms. Greystone derived its name from the grayish tint of the Indiana Lime Stone used for the 3-foot thick walls.
