Castle Green Apartments
Construction of “The Annex” of Hotel Green in Pasadena started in May 1897, was completed in November of 1898 and formally opened January 16, 1899. Architect Frederick I. Roehrig drew on Moorish, Spanish, Victorian, and other stylistic elements to produce what was considered Pasadena’s most stunningly original building, what came be be called the Castle Green. The annex had come under separate management in the mid-1920s and officially was organized as the Castle Green Apartments in 1926. The establishment of a co-operative apartment house was an unusual venture for its time. The conversion of the hotel into an apartment house was made feasible by the high quality of the building’s initial construction and the existing proportions of the large suites. Castle Green is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
