Mission Hills Historic District

Since 2001, architectural photographer John Bare has documented numerous historic residential districts throughout Southern California. Today SoCal Landmarks is presenting selections from the Mission Hills area of San Diego. While some of the homes and buildings may be noteworthy on their own, the goal of John’s documentation, and our presentations, is to provide an overview of the districts and the variety of architectural styles that contribute to their distinction. The largely residential Mission Hills Historic District in San Diego is located on hills overlooking Old Town and the San Diego Bay. Development took off when the real estate company Gordon, Goodwin, and Co., along with George Marston, purchased land for subdivision in 1908. A further boost came when John Spreckels connected the area to downtown San Diego via electric streetcar in 1910. Many residences were designed by San Diego’s noted architects including William Hebbard, William Templeton Johnson, Emmor Brooke Weaver, Nathan Rigdon, Richard Requa, and Joel E. Brown.
