Main US Post Office
The main U.S. Post Office building in Glendale was built in 1933-34. The architect, George M. Lindsey, was the first licensed architect to maintain an office in Glendale. Like most post offices, the Glendale building conforms to a rigid, classical symmetry. A two-story central area housing the lobby and administrative offices is flanked by two low wings accomodating work areas. The overall architectural style is described as an exceptionally late example of Italian Renaissance Revival, placing the structure in opposition to the prevailing architectural taste of the 1930s. And while most building designs of that style were derived from religious and other public buildings, Lindsey’s design draws more from the semi-private palazzo. The building is listed on both the Glendale and National Register of Historic Places.
