San Diego Athletic Club
Leading citizens and businessmen founded the San Diego Athletic Club in 1924 to provide a social and athletic facility for the San Diego community. Funds were raised, ground-breaking was in July, 1926, and the 12-story building, designed with Art Deco Ziggurat and Late Gothic Revival elements, opened in 1928. The club folded in the mid-1960s and the building was converted to offices for Harcourt Brace Jovanovich (HBJ). HBJ vacated the building in 1993 and donated the property to the City. World Trade Center San Diego, established by the City and Port of San Diego, occupied the building starting in 1994. In 2010, the City of San Diego announced its plans to use the building to provide housing, support and services for a portion of its homeless population that is now Connections Housing. The San Diego Athletic Club is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
