Santa Monica Municipal Airport
Before 1927 when it was renamed the Santa Monica Airport by the City Council, it had been Clover Field, dedicated by the Army Air Corps to World War I pilot Lt. Greayer Clover in 1923. Before it became a principal general aviation “reliever” airport for the Greater Los Angeles area, accommodating mostly business aircraft, training aircraft, and personal planes, it was the headquarters of the Douglas Aircraft Company where the company manufactured the entire Douglas Commercial “DC” series of airliners from the DC-1 prototype to the DC-7. Today, in addition to aviation services, the Airport is home to various types of businesses, including art studios, office space and event venues, notably the historic Barker Hangar. The Museum of Flying, across the street from the terminal, opened in 1989 featuring the “Spirit of Santa Monica” DC-3 outside its entrance.
