Bill Keene Memorial Interchange

The Four Level Interchange built at the junction of US 101 (Hollywood Freeway) and CA 110 (Harbor Freeway/Arroyo Seco Parkway) at the northern edge of Downtown Los Angeles was the first stack interchange in the world. In 2006, the interchange was officially renamed the Bill Keene Memorial Interchange in the memory of Los Angeles traffic and weather reporter Bill Keene. Construction was completed in 1949, but it was not fully opened until 1953 when connecting freeway construction was completed. The interchange, sometimes called simply “The Stack,” was retrofitted after the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It is the only interchange in the region to be certified as a civil engineering landmark by the Society of Civil Engineers. It is also considered an aesthetic achievement, or as the Los Angeles Times said in 1949, “It’s the most photogenic pile of cement in town.”
