Bandy House
Julius H. Anderson was president of Escondido Lumber and served for a time as cashier at the Bank of Escondido. He purchased the land for his house from the Escondido Land and Town Company for $325 in gold coins. The 3,250-square-foot, 11-room, Queen Anne style house, built in 1891, was designed by the renowned architectural firm of Comstock and Trotsche. Subsequent owners included N. Fredrick Hansen, business manager of the Escondido Times and former Iowa state Sen. Abraham Garlock. But the house was named for Tom Bandy who lived there for more than 50 years. The Bandys moved into the house in 1908, the same year that Tom Bandy & Sons Blacksmith and Wheelwright shop opened. For almost 60 years, they worked on carriages and farm equipment, ornamental iron, restoration of antiques, and auto springs and frames. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
