St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in National City was built in 1887. There is some disagreement as to who is the architect of the structure, but the design in the Gothic Revival style with Tudor influences was said to be inspired by a picture of a small church in the south of England. The first service at St. Matthew’s was held July 3, 1887. From that date until today, services have been held regularly in St. Matthew’s Church. The fortunes of the Church have fallen and risen with the economic conditions of the times, the doors have remained open. The building is the oldest remaining church building in National City, the oldest church building in the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego still standing in its original location and, very likely, the oldest Protestant church building in San Diego County. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
