John Ginty House
The John Ginty House, built during the height of San Diego’s boom period, represents an excellent example of Victorian era architecture in San Diego and of the early development of Prospect Hill (now called Cortez Hill). Of the prominent homes built there at the end of the 19th century, it is one of only a handful still standing. John Ginty was a prominent San Diego businessman involved mainly in real estate and banking. His 5,400 square foot, two and a half story house was built in about 1886 in the Victorian Stick Style. It was enlarged in 1899 at which time Queen Anne elements, most notably the tower, were added. It was designated a San Diego Historic Landmark in 1991. In 1999 the house was saved from demolition and moved to its present location. It was subsequently rehabilitated to qualify for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
