Park Place Episcopal Church
Park Place Methodist Episcopal Church South is a remarkable example of a Classical Revival building, almost unique in San Diego. It was designed by architect Norman Foote Marsh who is most noted for buildings he designed for Redlands University and the city plan for Venice, California. Built in 1910, the building is located at the edge of Balboa Park. It was one of the significant number of federal buildings and cultural and religious structures that sprang up as city fathers looked to focus world attention on San Diego with the Panama-California Exposition. The Methodist Episcopal congregation held services here for decades, followed by a Baptist congregation that used it until 1978. It is now used as an event venue called The Abbey on Fifth Avenue operated by Hornblower Cruises and Events. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
