Bakersfield Californian Building
Built in 1926, the Bakersfield Californian Building is considered an architectural landmark and a reminder of the golden years of the newspaper. The publisher at the time, Alfred Harrell, was an esteemed member of the community and from his tenure starting in 1897 to his death in 1946, built the newspaper’s reputation as an institution committed to civic responsibility. Mr. Harrell was extremely active in War Bond Drives during both World War’s I and II. The Bakersfield Californian is the direct descendant of the first newspaper in Kern County and remains one of the county’s primary sources of news. On the occasion of the official opening of the building, Mr. Harrell received congratulations from many prominent people including the President of The United States, Calvin Coolidge. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
