Los Angeles Times Building
The cornerstone of the Los Angeles Times Building reads, “This stone was set this day, April 10, 1934, by Harry Chandler, publisher of the Los Angeles Times.” Local master architect Gordon B. Kaufmann designed the building in the Art Deco style featuring powerful vertical ribs, which impart a sense of monumentality as they lead the viewer’s eye up to the iconic letters, “The Times,” etched onto the side of the building. The new headquarters of the Los Angeles Times opened in 1935. The ten-story Mirror Building addition was designed by Rowland Crawford in a complimentary style in 1948. The highlight of the interior of the 1935 building is the glittering Globe Lobby, famous for its aluminum globe, 5 1/2 feet in diameter. Ten-foot high murals by artist Hugo Ballin adorn the walls, depicting scenes from Los Angeles history and the newspaper industry.
