Callaway Vineyard and Winery
Who did what first and when in the development of winemaking in the Temecula area might be argued. But it is said that Ely Callaway put Temecula on the map as a serious wine producing region and Callaway is the oldest Temecula vineyard and winery still in operation. The Callaway family owned eight textile mills and during World War II the Army put Ely’s experience to work at its main procurement facility for all its clothing. That led to positions at clothing manufacturers ending with president of Burlington Industries. In the late 1960s, extensive research led Callaway to Temecula and veteran viticulturist John Moramarco, who helped Callaway find a location for growing grapes. In 1969, the Callaway vineyards were planted and in 1973, Callaway said goodbye to textiles. He sold the winery in 1981 and used the proceeds to start Callaway Golf Company.
