Home Savings and Loan
The former Home Savings and Loan Bank (now Chase Bank) at Harbor and Lincoln in Anaheim is generally a massive Modernist block built in 1970 in an open U-shape facing the corner on a diagonal. Like some 150 Home Savings bank buildings, it was designed and built by Millard Sheets featuring a huge mosaic. And like many of the mosaics, its subject is topical to the location – in this case depicting scenes from Anaheim history. From right to left, one sees a vinter inspecting his product, Helena Modjeska in a green dress, Edward Atherton and his new bride, Carolina Sellinger, Frederick Rimpau, Chief of Anaheim Fire Company No. 1 and orange pickers at work, to mention a few. Unlike many of Sheets’s designs, there is a 9-panel stained glass window behind the tellers that echoes the historic Anaheim theme of the mosaic.
