Los Angeles Maritime Museum
The Los Angeles Maritime Museum is housed in the former Municipal Ferry Terminal building at Berth 84 in San Pedro. Finished in 1941 as a WPA project, it was one of the pair of terminals for the auto ferry service carrying passengers to and from Terminal Island. L.A. Harbor Department architect Derwood Lydell Irvin designed it, and its reciprocal terminal at Berth 234 on Terminal Island, in the Streamline Moderne style. Ferry service between San Pedro and Terminal Island ceased after the Vincent Thomas Bridge was opened to traffic in 1963. With some re-design work by architects Pullman and Matthews, the building with its five-story distinctive octagonal tower has been home to the L.A. Maritime Museum since 1979. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
