Fort MacArthur
The “Old Government Reservation” next to San Pedro Bay became property of the U.S. War Department in 1888. Additional tracts of land were added In 1897 and 1910 in preparation for the construction of fortifications to guard the newly completed deep water harbor facilities of the Port of Los Angeles. In 1914 the property was named Fort MacArthur in honor of Civil War Medal of Honor recipient Lt. General Arthur MacArthur (father of General Douglas MacArthur). Numerous gun emplacements, or batteries, were built starting in 1917. Ownership of some of the property was transferred to the City of Los Angeles in 1975; the remainder was transferred to the Air Force in 1982. Battery Osgood-Farley, now a museum, is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
