Major Myles Moylan House
The Major Myles Moylan House in San Diego is an early local example of Colonial Revival residential architecture. The house was designed by architects Joseph Falkenham and Irving Gill. Gill has been recognized as one of Southern California’s most influential architects and the Moylan House is the earliest residential structure by Gill still standing. The historical significance of the house lies in the prominence of its first owner, Major Myles Moylan. He enlisted in the Army in 1857. During the Civil War, he fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Gettysburg and Appomattox. In 1863, he served briefly under First Lieutenant George A. Custer. He joined the cavalry after the war and served under Custer at Little Big Horn. He moved to San Diego on retiring in 1893. The house is a City of San Diego Historical Site and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
