CoCo’s Restaurant
The architectural firm of Armet and Davis and Googie style go hand in hand. Their design for Bob’s Big Boy Restaurants was used in numerous locations including Garden Grove in Orange County. The building on Harbor Blvd. still exhibits many of the defining googie characteristics including a unique roofline, flagstone walls, walls of glass, low-cut landscaping and the sign. Built in 1965, it was a Carrow’s Restaurant for a while until it became a Coco’s in the 1980s. In 2017, In-N-Out worked with the city of Garden Grove to adapt the restaurant to its needs. Their plans would have irreversibly altered the historic fabric of its Googie style. Preservation Orange County (POC) took up the restaurant’s preservation and is working with the owners to find alternatives to maintain the defining features of its architecture.
