Anaheim Cemetery
Sandwiched between houses in a suburban neighborhood, the 16-acre Anaheim Cemetery is the oldest of Orange County’s three public graveyards. The city’s German settlers established it in 1866, buying the acreage for a total of $100 so they could expand beyond the family plots on the grounds of their vineyards. It is the final resting place for over 500 war veterans, several thousand early settlers of Orange County and members of families living in the area. It is home to the oldest community mausoleum on the west coast, built in 1914, and four private family mausoleums of prominent local families. The Pioneer Memorial Archway, the original entrance to the cemetery, was erected in 1917 through a donation by F.A. Hartman. A small grove of Dawn Redwood trees, a memorial to the Chinese interred in the cemetery, is the only stand of the species in California.
