Hollywood Forever Cemetery
Hollywood Forever Cemetery is the final resting place of hundreds of Hollywood’s founders and stars, along with thousands of neighborhood residents and individuals from around the globe. Founded as Hollywood Memorial Park Cemetery in 1899, it grew along with the movie business. Founders Isaac Lankershim and his son-in-law, Isaac Van Nuys, wealthy San Fernando Valley ranchers and farmers, bought 100 acres of land from Mary Gower. It was the first cemetery to be built in Hollywood and is one of the earliest examples of the lawn-park style cemetery in California. They sold 40 acres of unused south-facing cemetery land to Paramount Pictures and RKO Radio Pictures in 1920. In 1998, brothers Tyler and Brent Cassity bought the property. They poured millions into renovations and renamed it Hollywood Forever. The cemetery is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
