Wattles Mansion
Wealthy Omaha banker Gurdon Wattles hired noted LA architects Myron Hunt and Elmer Grey to design his winter home in 1907. Sited on a hillside in the Hollywood Hills just west of Runyon Canyon, the Mission Revival Wattles Mansion, originally known as Jualita, with adjoining park and garden comprise the Wattles Estate. According to the City of Los Angeles, “Jualita” is one of the few remaining landscapes reminiscent of another era and tradition [preceding the film industry], possessing a genuine integrity of setting, design, workmanship, and association. After Wattles’ death in 1932, his wife, Julia Vance Wattles, and son, Gurdon Wallace Wattles Jr., continued to live on the property. Gurdon, Jr. negotiated the sale of the residence to the City of Los Angeles in 1965. It was designated a Los Angeles Cultural Monument in 1993.
