Sinai Temple
Begun in 1906, Sinai Temple was established as the first Conservative Jewish congregation in Southern California. The congregation moved from facilities in the downtown Los Angeles area to mid-Wilshire in 1925 and to its current location in the Westwood district in 1956. The synagogue at Wilshire and Beverly Glen was designed by renowned L.A. architect Sidney Eisenshtat. A graduate of the USC School of Architecture inspired by early Modernists, Eisenshtat designed his first synagogue, Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, in 1951. His design for Sinai Temple is described as “a magnificent statement in Expressionist design, full of color, rhythm, and dramatic angles” and has been compared to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright.
