Barbara Greenwood Kindergarten
Miss Barbara Greenwood, a pioneering kindergarten teacher, partnered with prominent architect Ferdinand Davis in 1908 to create Pomona’s first stand alone kindergarten. This craftsman style bungalow featured low window sills so children could look outside, a stage area for performances and bathroom fixtures small enough for young students. Miss Greenwood served as Pomona’s supervisor of kindergartens from 1901 to 1911. She joined the University of California’s Southern Branch (now UCLA) faculty in 1912 to establish the University Nursery School program, a first in California. Pomona’s oldest educational structure has been moved several times to save it and now serves the community as a museum in a setting virtually identical to its original setting. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
