Citizen Public Market
Eugene Donovan built the 6,600-square foot Citizen Publishing Company Building in Culver City in 1929 to house his printing/publishing company that produced “The Citizen” newspaper from 1929 to 1955. The company also produced some 500 prop newspapers a year for the nearby studios of MGM, Selznick, RKO and others. Donovan’s wife, Catherine, collaborated with architect Orville E. Clark in the notable design of the building in which the Beaux Arts style of the massive arched entryway blends with the Art Deco elements of vertical piers, tiered setbacks and restrained ornamentation. In early 2017 Rick Moses Development (RM/d), developer of the latest makeover of L.A.’s Grand Central Market, purchased the property and created Citizen Public Market, a fine example of adaptive reuse. It is a Culver City Historic Site and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
