Wilshire Professional Building
The thirteen-story Wilshire Professional Building in Los Angeles is a good example of 1920s Art Deco architecture that brought attention to Wilshire Boulevard. It was designed in the Zigzag Moderne style by noted architect Arthur E. Harvey and built by developer Luther T. Mayo Inc. in 1929 for Preston Wright and Associates. While the building was intended mainly for doctors and dentists, other professionals had offices there including Harvey, the building’s architect. It was the first of a series of “height limit” skyscrapers to be constructed on Wilshire at the end of the thoroughfare’s first major period of development just before the advent of the Great Depression. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles successfully campaigned to have it designated as a Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument.
