Redwine Building
Richard Douglas King designed a rectangular two-story office building in the Art Deco style for attorney Hiram G. Redwine in the heart of Hollywood in 1931. The Redwine Building replaced his family residence on the site and was used as his office, a meeting place and as leased offices by companies such as Shell Oil. The panel over the door features motifs related to the practice of law, including the scales of justice, a gavel and open book, to highlight Redwine’s profession. The building retains many character-defining features of the Art Deco style including the stepped pyramidal tower, three-tiered inset entryway and decorative grille work. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles successfully campaigned to have it designated as a Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument.
