Herald Examiner Building, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County

Herald Examiner Building

William Randolph Hearst commissioned architect Julia Morgan to design the building to house his sixth newspaper, the Los Angeles Examiner, in 1913. Morgan designed the building in the then-popular Mission Revival style. Completed in 1914, the Herald Examiner Building was the first collaboration between Hearst and Morgan, who went on to design Hearst Castle in San Simeon. The newspaper folded in 1989 and the property became a popular filming location. New York developer Georgetown Co. purchased a stake in the building in 2015 and partnered with Hearst Corp. in a multiuse redevelopment project. Located at the corner of Broadway and 11th Streets in downtown L.A., the building’s red tile roof and blue and yellow tiled domes make it a visible neighborhood landmark. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
