Green Dog & Cat Hospital
In 1933, veterinarian George C. Green hired Jules G. Koppel to design a mixed‐use building for his veterinary practice and personal residence on W. Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles. Like most other veterinary operations in Los Angeles, the Green Dog & Cat Hospital was built in an industrially zoned area that allowed for animal boarding and veterinary practices. Koppel designed Green’s building in an exuberant Art Deco style with a vertical emphasis, ensuring high visibility along the busy Slauson Avenue. The Green Dog & Cat Hospital is one of the oldest continuously operating purpose‐built pet hospitals in Los Angeles. It is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and the California Register of Historical Resources. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles successfully campaigned to have it designated as a Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument.
