Culver Hotel
Harry H. Culver founded his namesake town in 1917. In 1924 he erected the six-story Hotel Hunt (now the Culver Hotel) to house his offices and large sales force on two floors with hotel rooms on the other four. He selected Los Angeles architects Curlett and Beelman to design the site-specific flatiron building in the Renaissance Revival style. The headlines of the September 4th, 1924, Culver City Daily News read “City packed with visitors for opening of Culver Skyscraper.” In an area of one- and two-story buildings, it was visible for miles around. Culver’s fortunes fell in the Depression and the building slowly fell into disrepair. Renovations begun in the 1990s have continued into the present. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
