Memorial Chapel, University of Redlands
The 1300-seat Memorial Chapel, dedicated in 1928, is the University of Redlands’ most iconic building, serving as the campus gathering space, place of worship and public face of the University. The university was formally established in 1907 and Jasper Newton Field, the minister at the First Baptist Church of Redlands, was elected its first president. Ground was broken on April 9, 1909, on land donated by K. C. Wells. With the growth of faculty, enrollment and finances after World War I, the chapel was one of 12 new buildings added to the campus in the late 1920s. Architect Norman Foote Marsh is said to have modeled the Memorial Chapel on 18th century Baptist churches in the Colonial US. Its architecture is accented by beautiful stained glass windows and a Casavant pipe organ.
