Fox Theater Pomona
When it opened in 1931, the Fox Theater in Pomona was a glamorous addition to a small, agricultural community on the outskirts of Los Angeles County. Balch and Stanbery of Los Angeles designed the 1750-seat theater in the Art Deco style. Its 81-foot corner tower, crowned with a neon FOX sign, was the tallest structure in the Pomona Valley. The sumptuous interior featured murals and tapestries, elaborate plaster panels, ornamental iron work, couches and one of the first commercial air-conditioning systems in the country. Theater owner Mann Theaters closed it in 1976. In 2002, the City of Pomona purchased the Fox. Following extensive restoration and rehabilitation, the theater reopened as a performance venue. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
