Mary Mitchell House
Brothers Edward, John and Thomas Mitchell immigrated to Ventura from Ireland in the 1870s. They made a living making bricks, working on local commercial buildings, chimneys and fireplaces. In the mid-1880s, John and Thomas bought up the block of property on what was then known as Meta Street. There are eight houses all in a row that make up what is now called the Mitchell Block, a City of Ventura historic district. One of those houses, the Mary Mitchell House, was built by the Mitchell brothers for Edward’s daughter in 1890. It is a combination of Queen Anne and Eastlake Victorian architecture anchored by a square Gothic tower with a crenalated parapet. It is one of only two remaining homes boasting brick construction prior to the 20th century.
