Bullocks Wilshire
After visiting the 1925 Exposition of Decorative and Modern Arts in Paris, P.G. Winnett and architects Donald and John Parkinson agreed to use the new Art Deco style for the department store conceived by Winnett and his partner, John G. Bullock. When it opened in 1929, Bullocks Wilshire was one of the first Art Deco structures built in the United States. The five-story building, clad in buff-hued terra cotta and accented with green verdigris copper, is topped with a spire soaring 241 feet. After facing an uncertain future in the 1990s, the building was purchased by Southwestern Law School, which spent ten years and $29 million to restore historic elements and adapt the building for state-of-the-art academic use. It is a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
