Blas Aguilar Adobe

Blas Aguilar Adobe is the last of 40 plaza adobes constructed in 1794 near Mission San Juan Capistrano to house soldiers and Acjachemen families. Don Blas Aguilar, the last alcalde of Capistrano under Mexican rule and the first Justice of the Peace under American rule, purchased the adobe, then Casa de Esperanza, or “House of Hope,” in 1845 along with the neighboring Casa Tejada. His family and following generations of Aguilars lived there until 1940, when it was purchased by the Catholic Church. The City of San Juan Capistrano Community Redevelopment Agency acquired the adobe in 1987. It is now a museum with artifacts from early San Juan and Acjachemen history. The adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
