Wadsworth Chapel

The Wadsworth Chapel on the Veterans Affairs West Los Angeles Healthcare Center campus in Westwood is the oldest building on Wilshire Blvd. The chapel was built in 1900 as the spiritual core of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers (NHDVS) envisioned by President Abraham Lincoln. This classic example of Victorian architecture was named after the home’s first Chief Medical Officer, Major James Wadsworth. This unique chapel was designed to serve Protestants on one side and Catholics on the other. Its detailing, window patterns, bell tower, and to some extent, interiors, remain intact. Yet it needs millions of dollars in repair and restoration and is currently closed to the public. The 1887 Fund is working to restore it – click here for more info.
