Boyle Hotel
The Boyle Hotel, also known as the Cummings Block, is located at the corner of Boyle Avenue and East First Street across from Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights. Designed by architect W. R. Norton in 1889 for community leaders George Cummings and his wife, Maria del Sacramento Lopez, this Victorian-era hotel became a social and political center for the community. It is one of the oldest remaining commercial structures in Los Angeles, representing the area’s transition from farmland to one of the first suburban neighborhoods east of downtown. The building was saved from demolition in 2006 by the East LA Community Corporation (ELACC) and was rehabilitated as affordable housing, reopening in 2012. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and on the National Register of Historic Places.
