Hangover House
Los Angeles architect William Alexander designed and built the Hangover House in Laguna Beach for his friend, travel writer and adventurer Richard Halliburton, in 1937. Also known as the Halliburton House, the two-story, three bedroom Moderne house with Brutalist influences was built on a hilltop with commanding views of the Pacific Ocean and Aliso Canyon. The nickname Hangover House is a pun on both the building’s location overlooking the cliffs and the alcohol consumed there. The house is built of cement and appears solid, but steel rebar inside it has rusted. A new owner has plans to renovate the house, keeping its historic nature intact. The City of Laguna Beach has determined the property is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
