The Women’s Improvement Club Clubhouse

The Women’s Improvement Club (WIC) of Corona was organized in 1899 with a goal of improving the community in which they lived. The clubhouse, built in 1913, was designed by architect Thomas Preston in the Craftsman Style based on the details of a Welsh church. It is the oldest secular assembly building in Corona and unique among the city’s structures in its architectural style. The clubhouse is a symbol of the commitment of many civic minded American women determined to bring their towns into the 20th century with order and beauty, improving the dusty agricultural image of early Corona. Today the clubhouse is still a site for social activity and community involvement. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
