Hillcrest Center for the Arts
Architect Robert Mason Houvener won a national competition with his design of the first City Hall built by the City of Thousand Oaks. Dedicated on February 24, 1973, the City occupied the two buildings built into a hilltop overlooking the Oaks Mall until 1988 when asbestos was found in the ceilings. It sat vacant and vandalized until the National Park Service leased the south building for its regional headquarters in 1997. In 2002, the Arts Council of the Conejo Valley, in partnership with the city and the Conejo Recreation and Park District, moved into the south building after the city made a decision to dedicate the north building to community purposes, rather than seeking a commercial tenant. It is a City of Thousand Oaks Historical Landmark.
