Fremont Theater
The Fremont movie theater in San Luis Obispo opened its doors on Memorial Day, 1942, with the West Coast premiere of “This Above All,” starring Tyrone Power and Joan Fontaine, with all ticket sales benefiting local chapters of the United Service Organizations. The building was designed in the Streamline Moderne style by prolific movie theater architect S. Charles Lee, whose Southern California projects include the Max Factor Building. The single-screen theater has struggled to survive so, changing with the times, has transformed into an event center. Since the early 1990s, the Fremont has played an integral part in the San Luis Obispo film festival and hosted concerts by the likes of Los Lobos, John Hiatt, Adam Ant, Taj Mahal and Yes.
