Ventura Theatre
Architect L. A. Smith designed the Ventura Theatre and flanking offices in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Robert E. Power Studios of San Francisco designed the lavish, elegant interior of gilt and opulence “in the style of the great movie palaces.” The only luxury theatre built in Ventura County in the 1920s opened on August 15, 1928, featuring an organ solo, the latest news, Our Gang comedies, a vaudeville act and the movie Excess Baggage. The original 1920s movie palace interior was restored to its former splendor in the 1980s and the theater was converted to a live concert and event venue. It is a Ventura Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
