Howard Hughes Headquarters
Howard Hughes commissioned LA contracting firm Myers Brothers to build a state of the art color film manufacturing plant in Hollywood for Hughes’ company, Multicolor, Ltd. Built in 1930-31, the property embodies the distinctive characteristics of the Art Deco architectural style. Parts of the building housed various tenants including a brewery, an ammunitions plant during World War II, and a candy factory, yet, from the time of its construction until Hughes’ death in 1976, the main building served primarily as a hub for his business empire. Following Hughes’ death in 1976, the building was sold to producer Knight Harris, who made some renovations in the 1980s. It was bought by the Canadian development firm, Onni Group, in December, 2021. The Art Deco Society of Los Angeles successfully campaigned to have it designated as a Los Angeles Historical-Cultural Monument.
