Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial
With sweeping views of La Jolla to the north and San Diego to the south, Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial in La Jolla is one of the most unique veterans memorials in the USA. Eleven curved walls contain more than 5,000 black granite plaques with images honoring veterans, living or deceased, from the revolutionary war to the current war on terror. The present cross was designed and put up in 1954, the third since the inception of the memorial in 1913. From 1989 to 2015, the Cross faced several legal challenges. In 2015 the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association purchased the land under the cross from the federal government, ending the litigation.
