Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument, Montebello, Los Angeles

Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument

The idea of the Armenian Genocide Martyrs Memorial originated with the 50th anniversary march of solidarity and remembrance through the streets of Los Angeles in April 1965. A location atop a grassy knoll in the center of Bicknell Park in the City of Montebello was secured. The $125,000 cost of construction was raised through a broad, international grassroots fundraising effort. The elegant structure stands 75 feet high and is comprised of eight cement columns which meet at the top in a shape resembling the cone-shaped steeples characteristic of Armenian churches. Its raised location makes it visible from the adjacent 60 freeway.
