Samuel Kraemer Building
Samuel Kraemer invested his wealth in developing much of downtown Anaheim during the 1920s, including this six-story building for the American Savings Bank of Anaheim completed in 1925. It was designed by local architect M. Eugene Durfee, who also designed the Chapman Building in Fullerton. At just over 85′ tall, it supplanted the Chapman Building as the tallest in Orange County. The rich use of Gladding-McBean tile on the entire south and west facades arguably made it the most outstanding building in North Orange County when it was built. The historic downtown fell out of favor with the growth of Anaheim in the 1950s-1970s. Once the dust of land clearance settled, the Kraemer Building was one of the few remaining structures of the old commercial center of the City. It listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
