Vetter Windmill
The Vetter Windmill in Hermosa Beach is one of the oldest remaining structures from the city’s early days. Hermann Vetter, the first City Clerk, moved to California from Germany in 1903. He built the windmill on his property near 16th Street and Ardmore Avenue to provide water for his flower and vegetable gardens. The property was purchased for development in the late 1960s. A citizens group formed to move the windmill to its present site in Greenwood Park at Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation. In the late 1990s, another citizens group raised funds to restore it to its current, functional condition.
