Coronado Bridge
Construction of the Coronado Bridge in San Diego started in February, 1967, after overcoming numerous obstacles including the concerns of the U.S. Navy about ships being trapped at Naval Base San Diego in the event of a collapse. It opened in August, 1969, as part of the city’s bicentennial celebration. Spanning 2.12 miles from San Diego to the Coronado peninsula, it is high enough, at 200 feet, to allow the tallest ships to pass safely under it. In 1970, it won an award of merit for long span bridge from the American Institute of Steel Construction and its design won a “Most Beautiful Bridge” competition in 1978. Chicano Park is at its eastern end.
