Sunken City
Starting in early 1929, a gradual landslide just east of Point Fermin Park in San Pedro eventually caused 5 acres of land, including streets, sidewalks and two houses, to fall into the ocean creating the Sunken City. The area is fenced off and trespassers can be fined up to $1000, but it remains an alluring “open secret” destination for curious visitors despite warnings and difficult access. The uneven surfaces and unstable land have contributed to injuries and about two dozen deaths.
